IRCTC to Offer Baggage Insurance for Travellers
What is your biggest worry while traveling? For some people it may be different, but I am sure losing of baggage or valuables is one of the major worries for most of us while traveling; especially when we travel by crowded trains. But, soon your baggage will be covered by an insurance net if you buy an e-ticket.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) is mulling over a ‘baggage insurance’ plan that would be able to burry this worry.
The IRCTC has tied-up with New India Assurance, a public sector insurer to offer ‘baggage insurance’ cover as part of its efforts to provide railway travelers more facilities for booking tickets online. Under the scheme, passengers can get compensation for lost or theft of their baggage and valuables such as – mobile, laptop etc.
The premium rates will be determined on the basis of the length of the journey and the class in which you travel. However, the IRCTC has not mandated the scheme. The traveler will have an option to avail the insurance cover. About 52% of passengers traveling around 2 million per day opt for e-ticketing route of booking tickets.
The scheme is being formalized. The IRCTC is also considering other options such as hospitalization benefit during the journey to make it best travel insurance policy. E-catering and concierge services for tickets booked online on certain trains and routes are already on offer.
